The artist is known for his mastery of action, his paintings resemble scenes on stage. Against a backdrop of landscape or buildings, action is made clear by  balancing of movements and handling of lights that is carefully planned as a theatrical performance. We see clearly a new approach which is very much original and spontaneous.His characters are expressive and dramatic.

Today I am going to unfold one of the major aspects of Raja Ravi Varma's painting,who belongs to the 19th century Indian art practice. We often discuss about the influence of western style on his paintings but I would like to highlight the other side of his work. I see a clear connection of Indian classical art in his works.  From his biographer's note we got to know that he had a profound knowledge of Indian mythology and literature.
